Our Practical and Meaningful Approach to Sustainability

At SM, sustainability is woven into how we operate and grow. We focus on practical solutions that drive environmental responsibility, social progress and long-term economic growth, creating meaningful impact where it matters most.

With our extensive business footprint, we do our share in conserving natural resources and protecting the environment both life on land and in water. We employ the “avoid, reduce, reuse, recycle and repurpose” approach in utilizing resources for operations and product development. We implement programs on waste management, plastic management, energy management and water management. We have invested in a waste-to-fluff fuel partnership with GUUN to reduce plastics footprint and develop alternative sources of energy. We actively implement water recycling initiatives to optimize consumption and reduce environmental impact.

At the core of our sustainability efforts are our own people and the communities we serve. We champion equal opportunity, ensuring fair and inclusive workplaces in every part of the SM Group. Meanwhile, we strive for social development and inclusion in our communities by providing access to education, healthcare and livelihood. Our banks also champion financial inclusion and provide access to funding for MSMEs. These efforts are complementary in creating equal opportunities and promoting social inclusion whenever SM is present.
Our core businesses—retail, property, and banking—help fuel local economies, transform emerging cities and serve Filipinos of all economic classes.  Our Group’s ecosystem serves as a platform to foster the creation of MSMEs, and local job creation. SM Retail is the core of our business – bringing essential goods, global brands, and everyday convenience to communities across the Philippines. We work with local and international partners to make shopping more accessible, while promoting sustainable choices through initiatives like Green Store, Green Finds, and Green Habit.

SM Properties

With our property businesses, we’re redefining urban living through integrated property developments designed for the future. Inspired by the 15-minute city concept, we create communities where convenience, sustainability, and resiliency come together, making it easier for Filipinos to live, work, and play in harmony with nature.

Banking

Our banking businesses support sustainable growth by financing green energy, infrastructure, and innovative technologies. We promote financial inclusion through microfinance loans and MSME support, while also empowering Filipinos with financial literacy programs to help build stronger financial futures.

Portfolio Investments

We invest in sectors that complement our core businesses. Our Portfolio companies bring synergies in our business ecosystem and align with ouu sustainability objectives. Philippine Geothermal Production Corporation (PGPC) supports the country’s renewable energy goals. We’re also investing in copper for its role in renewable energy generation, and in driving greener logistics through 2GO.
