SM SUPER Media Awards Salute Press Coverage of Yolanda

SM Foundation Member of Board of Trustees Felicidad Sy, SM Vice Chairperson Teresita Sy-Coson, and TV host Kris Aquino join the awardees of the SUPER Media Awards

(21 May 2014. Pasay City, Philippines) SM Foundation, Inc. honored the extraordinary efforts of the men and women of media who risked their lives to tell stories in the wake of Super Typhoon Yolanda (International Name: Haiyan).   

SM’s S.U.P.E.R (Salute to Unparalleled People, Endeavors and Resources) Media Awards, held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City on May 19, 2014, honored the media’s acts of bravery, for risking all amid extreme circumstances to keep the public informed and updated about the imminent arrival of Typhoon Yolanda so those in its path can prepare and evacuate when necessary as well as share their experiences and relay to the public the unprecedented strength of the typhoon. 

The Awards also recognized journalists who covered Typhoon Yolanda during landfall, in areas where the typhoon was at its strongest signals 3 and 4.

“This year, we recognize and honor the bravery of the representatives of the Philippine and International media who have placed their lives on the line at the height of super typhoon Yolanda. Their efforts led to a massive response of disaster relief and rehabilitation, saving lives and easing the pain of many survivors,” SM Vice Chairperson Teresita Sy-Coson said.

Posthumous awards were also given to three members of the media who passed away while on active duty when Yolanda made landfall. They are Archi Globio of DYBR Tacloban, Ronald Vinas and Allan Medino of DYVL Tacloban. Their families received on their behalf, a special endowment worth PHP 200,000.

TV host Kris Aquino and SM Foundation Member of the Board of Trustees Felicidad Sy graced the event by opening a photo exhibit of works by photojournalists depicting messages of resilience, courage, and hope.
