SM Scholars Gather for Annual General Assembly

A majority of SM scholars gathered at the Premier Cinema of SM Mall of Asia recently for their 2012 General Assembly, where the theme “Embrace, Expand, Own Your Scholarship,” was expounded by Harley Sy, president of SM Investments Corporation (SMIC).

In attendance were 760 scholars from Bulacan, Baliwag, San Fernando, Clark, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Cavite, Calamba, Laguna, and Sta. Rosa, Batangas, Lipa, Quezon Province and the National Capital Region. Scholars from the Bicol region, the Visayas and Mindanao did not attend.

Debbie Sy, SMFI executive director, and Linda Atayde, SMFI director for education, welcomed the scholars, while Eleanor Lansang briefed the scholars, especially the new ones of the rules and regulations governing the SM College Scholarship Program. She also announced the schedule of activities for the school year. A showing of the Amazing Spiderman capped the event.

In 1993 the scholarship program of SM Foundation was launched and envisioned by its founder Henry Sy, Sr. as a means of providing promising students whose families have no financial capability to get them a college education. After their graduation, he expects the scholars to help in the schooling of their siblings thereby enhancing the quality of life in the family. Since its institution, the foundation has given such college education to over 1.500 Filipino youths.
