SM Markets first in line to aid Nueva Ecija Onion Farmers

SM Markets meets with Local Onion Growers for National Economy & Trade (LOGNET) heads in line with Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol’s initiative for Philippine food retailers to directly source produce from local farmers. (L-R) LOGNET Chairman Israel Reguyal, LOGNET Secretary Joy Dela Rosa, SM Markets Consultant for External Affairs Pong Ejercito, and SM Supermarket president Joey Mendoza.

SM Markets, in support of Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol’s initiative to uplift the local farming industry, takes the first step by directly sourcing onions from the farmers of Nueva Ecija. The initial order of onions, amounting to approximately 20 metric tons, is set to be available on the shelves of select SM Supermarket, Savemore Market, and SM Hypermarket branches this Friday, December 9, 2016.

The program orchestrated by the Department of Agriculture (DA) aims to connect local food retailers, including SM Markets, to local farming communities for the benefit of both parties. SM Markets dealt with the Nueva Ecija-based Local Onion Growers for National Economy & Trade Cooperative initially endorsed by the DA Secretary.

SM Markets will augment onion sales through communication efforts in enjoining its shoppers to help support the DA’s initiative.
