Sailing Home: 2GO provides safe travel to returning heroes from Odette-hit areas

2GO’s MV St. Francis Xavier brought 65 linemen and engineers as part of power restoration teams safely home and welcomed by 2GO and Meralco representatives after being deployed in the affected regions of Typhoon Odette.

Modern heroes don’t wear capes, as they say. Sometimes, they are clad in leather protectors, insulated sleeves, and hard hats.

As most Filipinos take part in the revelries of the Christmas season, on the frontlines were the linemen and engineers braving the toppled electrical lines and impassable roads to restore the power lines in typhoon-stricken communities hampered by Typhoon Odette in its wake.

2GO and its crew were honored to be bringing home safely to a hero’s welcome 65 linemen and engineers from Meralco’s power restoration teams after being deployed in the affected regions of Typhoon Odette since December 21, 2021.

“What they went through was really tough. Some of them even caught COVID-19 while in deployment and had to isolate. The moment they got clearance from our doctors they immediately went back to work.  All of us in Meralco are very proud of them,” said Ronnie Aperocho, Senior Vice President and Head of Meralco Networks.

2GO, a part of SM Investments Corporation’s portfolio companies, provided these brave modern heroes with grocery baskets from SM Markets to enjoy with their families for their sacrifices in serving the nation.

These linemen and engineers were able to help local electric companies and cooperatives restore power in Cebu, Bohol, and Surigao, which were left completely without power for several weeks after the typhoon.

“We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to this courageous group of people who went way beyond the call of duty and who exhibited the truest form of the bayanihan spirit that we all like to emulate,” Blessie Cruz, Assistant Vice President for Marketing said.

Relief efforts remain in full swing in areas hit by the typhoon with 2GO as it recently transported 500 tons of essential goods port-to-port free of charge from Manila to Cebu, Tagbilaran, Cagayan de Oro, and Ozamis last January 19. The collaborative efforts of 2GO with One Meralco Foundation were able to transport thirty-four (34) basket trucks and ferried Meralco’s power restoration teams for the completion of power restoration in the provinces of Cebu and Bohol.

2GO provided grocery baskets from SM Markets to the brave linemen and engineers of Meralco to enjoy a well-deserved Noche Buena feast with their families for their sacrifices in serving the nation.
