Balanghai and Galleons at SM MOA Drive-In cinema

The Filipino Heritage Festival, Inc. and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in partnership with SM Cinema Drive-In will stage a virtual dance concert, Of Balanghai and Galleons: Journey Towards Nationhood in celebration of the National Heritage Month at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds.

A project of the Filipino Heritage Festival Inc, this production pairs aspects of history with an artistic interpretation of the journeys and influences that shaped our culture today. This begins with the time of the Austronesian settlers, through the establishment of the island Kingdoms that dotted the archipelago, all the way to the mighty Galleon Trade that linked the Philippines to Spain.

Through dance pieces, tableaux and original music, the journeys of our ancestors come alive in a one hour virtual dance concert; a newly-edited version of the 2018 cultural concert Journeys on a Galleon. It aims to expand the original production which was focused on the Galleon Trade into a show that commemorates the Circumnavigation of the World.

In a time when the pandemic has severely limited our lives, it is inspiring to go back in history and see how our own ancestors shaped outside influences and made these a part of their own culture.

Written and directed by Floy Quintos, the show will feature the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, The UE Silanganan Dance Troupe, Philippine Ballet Theater and The Ateneo Chamber Singers. Choreography by Gener Caringal set to original music by Jesse Lucas.

There will be a narration of historical vignettes by Jeremy Domingo.

Of Balanghai and Galleons: Journey Towards Nationhood will be shown at the SM Cinema Drive-in, SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds Block 16 on June 26, 2021, at 7 pm.
