(17 December 2009. Pasay City, Philippines.) Philippine conglomerate SM Investments Corporation (SM) recently garnered The Asset Platinum Corporate Award 2009 for all-around excellence in financial performance, management, corporate governance, social responsibility, environmental responsibility, and investor relations. SM thus became one of only three Philippine companies to make it to the top 20 list of Asian companies to receive the Platinum Award, the highest recognition being given based on a study done by The Asset Publishing and Research Ltd, a prominent multi-media entity serving the Asian financial markets and publisher of The Asset magazine.

The 2009 study set much higher standards of screening in five main categories namely the companies’ three-year financial performance, corporate governance, social responsibility, environmental responsibility, and investor relations. Other winners include companies from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India.

SM President Mr. Harley T. Sy said, “We are honored to receive this award given to SM by The Asset. We welcome the recognition as a means to further motivate us in pursuing our vision and commitment to excellence in all aspects of the company.”

For 2009, The Asset revised and expanded its awards program criteria, encompassing the nominated companies’ growth and social objectives, unlike in previous years when corporate governance was the sole focus. According to The Asset, the more stringent criteria “emerges from the latest financial crisis, the demands made on listed companies that are greater than before. Companies are expected to deliver a strong financial performance whilst also operating in a transparent and socially acceptable manner. In addition, against the backdrop of concerns over climate change, more companies are now implementing environmentally responsible policies.”

Scores were given for each of the categories, which were rated by investors, analysts, and industry specialists, through interviews conducted by The Asset. They assessed the companies for their management skills and acumen. Scores for this criterion were also accordingly given. Under the new scheme, there are now three corporate awards categories, with Platinum being the highest, followed by Gold, and Titanium.
