SM Aura Premier in Taguig City is proud to announce that it has managed to secure a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, making it the first and only shopping mall in the Philippines to achieve this kind of green building certification. Based on the gross square footage, it is also reported to be the largest.

"Given the extraordinary importance of climate protection and the central role of the building industry in that effort, SM Aura Premier demonstrates their leadership through their LEED certification of Gold," Business Mirror reported US Green Building Council (USGBC) president and CEO Mahesh Ramanujam, as saying.

LEED certification extends to efficiency, air quality, and construction materials

According to LEED Consultant Raymond Andrew Sih, SM Aura had managed to achieve a LEED Gold certification by both meeting and exceeding international standards when it comes to energy efficiency, water efficiency, thermal comfort and indoor air quality. Sih also took note of the building materials that the shopping mall had used to construct SM Aura.

"SM Aura Premier was built with the environment in mind. Almost a third of the cost of construction materials were locally sourced, over twenty percent of the cost of construction materials were from recycled materials, and over ninety-five percent of the construction waste was recycled," Manila Bulletin reported Sih as saying.

Aside from this, Sih also noted that the SM Aura's waste water treatment plant also follows LEED standards by making sure that it recycles water for non-potable use in its facilities. In fact, the building's centralized air conditioning system is being cooled with recycled water. Meanwhile, he also took note of the energy efficient LED lighting system used throughout the mall as well as the insulated glass panels for double low emissivity.

Green And Caring

At the same time, the Sky Park at SM Aura Premier has also gained attention from LEED. Sih has noted that the Sky Park's garden area on the rooftop not only allows mall goers to relax, dine and enjoy the sweeping views of the metro. In fact, its design allows plants to have plenty of space, recycled water, and oil. In turn, these plants help protect the building from the intense heat of the sun. According to Ramannujam, having a LEED certification is also about "making the world a better place and influencing others to do better."

LEED is a program designed by USGBC. It uses a certification process that has four rating levels, namely Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. A LEED certified building is expected to be resource efficient with less water and energy use. The building should also have reduced greenhouse gas emissions. According to USGBC, a building with LEED certification is able to save money because of these practices.
